They said to buy a Costco sauna… We recently purchased a Costco outdoor sauna, and I’ll share what we learned in this Costco sauna review.
Why buy a home sauna?
I have been researching the benefits of saunas for quite some time. After looking at the pros and cons of dry vs. infrared, I decided on a dry sauna. Honestly, it had been quite a long time since I had been in a dry sauna, so I wasn’t entirely sure how I would like it, but I was pretty hooked on all the benefits I had found while doing my research. I knew I wanted to have a home sauna that we could place outdoors. I read a lot about barrel saunas and learned that they efficiently use energy because they distribute heat evenly. The curved roof is supposed to be better at repelling water and snow, which are considerations for our location here and at the black stallion cabin. This gives us the option of considering one for our cabin. Most of all, I liked the space-efficient aspect of the barrel sauna. I didn’t want it to take up a considerable space in our backyard.
Why buy from Costco?
We spent a lot of time looking at sauna companies and sauna reviews. Then, we got overwhelmed with the idea of shipping, assembly, and price points. We almost shelved the idea, but our anniversary was coming up, and we thought the sauna was a perfect gift for both of us.
I had an idea to check Costco. I was surprised to find Costco had outdoor saunas—I’m not sure why I was surprised! We decided on a basic 4-person sauna. We wanted quality but didn’t want to get involved in anything too expensive since we weren’t sure we wanted to invest a ton into something we weren’t sure we would love. Costco was the choice because we have always had good luck with them sticking by their products and warranties. Also, the shipping was fast and easy.
Delivery and Assembly of Costco Almost Heaven 4-Person Sauna
I was concerned about how this sauna would arrive. How huge would the delivery be, and how long would it take? We received ours in about ten days. We were out of town and had to have the delivery held for a day. The sauna comes in a big box on a pallet. It’s all the wood and heater unit.
The delivery looks like this:
Time to assemble
Assembly is very basic. My DH assembled it in a few short hours, all by himself. Only basic tools are needed.
Hooking the outdoor sauna up
This sauna is an electric-powered dry sauna. You can manually add water to create steam, pouring water over the heater rocks as desired. We needed an electrician to power the hard wire. This was a cost that was hard to plan for and one that added some pretty significant costs to the project. Honestly, I was a bit shocked when we received some quotes for hook-up. We relied on someone who worked on our pool build; luckily, his bid was significantly lower than the others. It cost us about $1000 (price at time of install only. Prices vary by region and specific install) to have the sauna hooked up. Your cost could vary greatly depending on your area’s installation location and pricing. I mention this because it was an unknown cost for us before we purchased it.
How it’s working
So far, we believe Costco outdoor saunas are good! We love ours. We have gotten ours up to about 165 to 175 degrees. Opening and closing the door can affect the temperature. In the future, we can always upgrade the heater if our bodies can comfortably tolerate more heat. Right now, our sauna gets plenty hot for us!
Weatherproofing
We live in the desert, so snow is not a concerning factor here. However, we purchased a very heavy-duty horse stall mat to cover the top of the sauna and help with the rain. The mat was only about $70 when purchased at the feed store, which is a big savings over the official sauna covers. Barrel saunas are designed with a curve to shed water and snow off the sides anyway, so the mat provides a little insurance.
Are Costco saunas good?
I’d have to say that we are very happy with our purchase of a Costco outdoor sauna. The price point and value were right in our comfort zone. We’ve been enjoying the relaxation and health benefits of using a sauna. Having your private sauna is a luxury that’s worth this price point. They said to buy a Costco sauna…and they were right!
